Belgian bpost has announced it is to be operating 1,200 electric vans by the end of 2022. Some 400 have just been ordered and a further 800 will be by the end of the month.
The postal operator has ordered the new fleet from multiple manufacturers. This is for two reasons – they can be delivered more quickly, but also so bpost can gain experience of using multiple models to see which is the best long term.
The plan is to have all 18,000 vehicles in its fleet zero emission by 2030. This is a significant step from the postal operator’s plans in 2019 when it envisaged that just 50% of its fleet would be zero emission by 2030. Its CEO Dirk Tirez wishes to make bpost the ‘greenest postal company in Europe’.
The move comes in part due to the advance in EV technology that the firm now says is ‘mature’ with acceptable ranges, capital costs and reliability.
