In the midst of the news storm around the Amazon fires, Brazil’s government has quietly announced it is to privatise its postal operator, the Empresa Brasileira de Correios e Telégrafos (Correios).
The pressures leading to Correios have been described by the Minister of the Economy Paulo Guedes as down to corruption and political interference in the management of the company. Inefficiency is an issue, as well as problems with labour relations leading to regular strikes. All this has led to loss of market share even as e-commerce grows rapidly in the country.
The current administration swept to power over consistent allegations of corruption in the previous government. The privatisation programme appears to be part of the meeting of electoral promises.
