Cainiao Smart Logistics well prepared for Singles Day

Amidst record sales over the Singles Day (11/11/20) Global Shopping Festival, Alibaba’s Cainiao Smart Logistics has ramped up capacity to meet demand.

As part of this the Chinese logistics giant has aimed at reducing the delivery time for more than half of its cross-border parcels through smart order consolidation and using more than 700 charter flights that will deliver more than 90% of the parcels sent from China. Cainiao claim that Singles Day parcels will arrive with customers in key European cities like Madrid, Paris and Warsaw within three days of making the order.

The Global Shopping festival peaked at 583,000 orders per second and gross merchandise volume (GMV) at US$56.3 billion, outstripping the GMV in 2019 of $38.3bn. More than 250,000 brands are participating in Singles Day.

James Zhao, general manager of Cainiao Global Supply Chain, said technology plays a key role in ensuring the successful delivery of billions of e-commerce parcels worldwide: “Today, 90% of our parcels are tagged with electronic shipping labels and this has fast become a de facto industry standard to achieve full visibility. IoT technology has also accelerated the automation of every aspect of the value chain, from sortation facilities, warehousing to customs clearance and last-mile delivery, significantly boosting operations efficiency and transforming the industry.
