China’s Neolix tests delivery robots in Gulf region

China based Neolix and Middle East e-commerce platform noon are to trial autonomous delivery vehicles in Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

The Gulf region has peculiar weather conditions with sand being caught in the wind and very high heat in the summer. Neolix is building the delivery robots to withstand temperatures of 50 degrees C and above as well as keeping the sand away from internal parts.

Noon is a joint venture between the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund and Dubai’s billionaire Mohammed Alabbar, and may soon have another sovereign wealth fund aboard soon. They are testing the delivery robots for last mile delivery in Abu Dhabi within the next few weeks.

The Gulf region is notable in that many Western companies compete openly with their Asian rivals in a reasonably open market. Given the number of delivery robot companies emerging from stealth mode in both regions, it will be interesting to see which come out top. Neolix certainly won’t be the last.
