Christine Holgate to be CEO of Global Express

Ex-Australia Post CEO Christine Holgate has been appointed CEO of Global Express. She stepped down from Australia Post due to a scandal in October last year.

Holgate is seeking an apology from the postal operator but no compensation, saying she is carrying a ‘life-long scar’ over her departure from Australia Post. She and the postal operator are in mediation.

Announcing her new role, she said she is excited at the new appointment. “I am really excited about it and I want to look forward. I’ve spent six months having to look backwards.”

“I’m very passionate about trade and very passionate about e-commerce. This is a massive national infrastructure business and actually employs a lot of people in rural and regional Australia, which is another passion of mine.”

Global Express, which has more than AUD $3 billion in annual revenues and employs 8,000 people, was acquired by private equity firm Allegro Funds from Japan Post in April.

Holgate resigned from her post on 2nd November, shortly after disclosing to an Australian Senate hearing that she had spent AU $20,000 on Cartier watches as bonuses for senior executives. This caused a media storm that she says, left her suicidal at one point.

“I don’t know if you ever get over it. And I don’t know if I want to, you know, it’s a scar that I will always carry,” she said. “I would always love an apology from the Prime Minister and the board of Australia Post.”

“I’ve had a lot of people reach out to me and asked me would I be interested in that – being their CEO or [to] join their board or chair [their] board.”
