Hot food delivery company Deliveroo has announced it is pulling out of the German market. The UK based on-demand delivery firm cites difficulties in offering the level of customer service that it offers in other markets.
“At Deliveroo we’re on a mission to create the very best food delivery service in the world, and at the heart of this is offering a service that works brilliantly for our customers, riders and restaurants,” it said in an email sent out to its users. “Where we cannot do this to the level that we expect and you deserve, we won’t operate. Therefore, Deliveroo’s focus will now be on growing our operations in other markets around the world.”
Germany has a very competitive hot food delivery market, and Deliveroo has struggled to gain market capitalisation there. The company began its retreat in Germany in 2018 with service closure in smaller German markets. Even focusing on larger cities in the country, it failed to gain traction.
Other major players have suffered in Germany too. While Delivery Hero sold its German hot food delivery business to Netherlands based Takeaway.com in 2018, Takeaway.com merged with JustEat to become the biggest companies in terms of market share in the region.
