DHL broke ground on its new Berlin mega-parcel-centre in Berlin at the Industriepark 4.0 in Ludwigsfelde. The new centre is planned to have a capacity of 50,000 parcels an hour and is set to open by mid-2021.
The new site is set to have an area of 165,000 square metres with a 37,000 square metre building. DHL say that it will create up to 600 jobs.
“The parcel market in the metropolitan region of Berlin / Brandenburg is growing continuously – and thus the demands and requirements of our customers. We want to continue to be your first choice. With the new mega-parcel center in Ludwigsfelde we are further expanding our high quality, preparing ourselves for the coming challenges and increasing the efficiency of our parcel infrastructure, “said Ralf Steffens, Business Unit Manager Operations Post and Parcel Germany, Deutsche Post DHL Group.
The new DHL site is well connected to major local arterial routes. The A10 is close by as is the federal highway B 101. It is also close to public transport infrastructure so staff will not be dependent on their cars to go to work.
The site is to have a combined heat and power plant to maximise energy efficiency, and will be lit naturally and with LED lamps.
