FedEx launches SenseAware ID tracking service

FedEx has announced the rollout of a new parcel tracking technology called SenseAware ID, which reports the location of a package hundreds of times in its journey as opposed to dozens on the current FedEx system.

According to the delivery giant, SenseAware ID will improve the safety, security and timeliness of deliveries. Where the anticipated COVID-19 vaccine deliveries are concerned this system will be particularly relevant for healthcare organisations.

“Package tracking and visibility are more important now than ever, as businesses have become increasingly reliant on timely deliveries,” said Robert B. Carter, executive vice president and chief information officer, FedEx Corporation. “Created by our innovation teams at FedEx, SenseAware ID was designed to give our customers the precise level of tracking they’ve been looking for, enabling them to optimise their supply chains and make any necessary adjustments during the journey of their shipments.”

The SenseAware ID system uses a lightweight, compact sensor on the package that transmits exact package location data every two seconds via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to WiFi access points or established gateway devices throughout the FedEx Express network. As such this will provide real-time data as to the exact location of the shipment from end to end.

Initially the FedEx SenseAware ID service is to be open to enhanced healthcare, retail and aerospace industries from November this year but will broaden out to a larger range of premium FedEx Express customers.
