FedEx is trialling a new autonomous delivery robot called the SameDay Bot. With 60% of customers living within three miles of stores they buy goods from, same day deliveries are feasible for many online shopping purchases.
The SameDay bot takes the goods from the retail outlet to the customer’s home or office address. It travels on pavements and along roadsides to deliver small-scale shipments.
“The FedEx SameDay Bot is an innovation designed to change the face of local delivery and help retailers efficiently address their customers’ rising expectations,” explained Brie Carere, executive vice president of FedEx.
“The bot represents a milestone in our ongoing mission to solve the complexities and expense of same-day, last-mile delivery for the growing e-commerce market in a manner that is safe and environmentally friendly.”
The SameDay Bot has ‘pedestrian safe technology’ using cameras and LiDAR sensing technology on top of GPS navigation to safely deliver the goods.
The machine lags behind the Starship and other delivery robots in that it is only at development stage – it seems that in making its own OEM machine the company is reinventing the wheel rather than using others’ technologies to achieve the same end. One SameDay Bot is in operation as against the thousands that ply US and EU roads that have been developed by other companies.
