Hamburg publishes e-cargo-bike study

As part of the German city of Hamburg’s climate plan a new study has called for more than double the current number of e-cargo-bikes currently in use in the city for express delivery to be on the roads by 2025.

The research looked at the requirements, risks and opportunities for e-cargo-bikes in the city. The study called for better e-cargo-bike infrastructure for zero emissions deliveries.

The expert panel commissioned by the Ministry of Economics in Hamburg included Berlin’s Cargobike.jetzt agency as well as Magdeburg and Wuppertal universities. They said, “The city’s goal of reducing CO2 pollution from courier, express and parcel services by 40 per cent by 2030 over 2017 and delivering at least 25 per cent of shipments with alternative means of transport such as cargo bikes requires a significant expansion of that infrastructure.”

In order to achieve its climate goals, the City of Hamburg needs to increase the number of e-cargo-bikes to 51,000 across the city, more than double the number on the streets today. Of these, 30% need to be in commercial use by late 2025 to achieve the target.
