UK carrier Hermes is to open a new depot in Bolton ahead of the 2021 peak delivery season. This purpose unit is being put into operation thanks to massive growth in Hermes delivery business in the last year – more than 50% in terms of parcel volumes as against 2019.
The new Wingates Estate Hermes depot is to replace the existing Bolton site and is to transfer all the staff from the existing site and add 100 new roles to include warehouse operatives, management, customer services and finance. The new Hermes site will handle up to 220,000 parcels a day.
Sustainability is an important factor of the design of the site, and will feature a number of EV charging points and smart lighting. It will also sort a large number of parcels that are moving between local locations and this the company claims will reduce its annual parcel mileage and ultimately Hermes overall carbon emissions nationally.
Carl Lyon, COO at Hermes UK, said, “The pandemic and lockdown restrictions have expedited the already significant growth of online shopping and we are continuing to make bold investments to ensure we can continue to meet current and future demand. Bolton is a key location for us and forms a vital part of our growing infrastructure.”
