Hermes UK has announced it has opened a new, 11,000 square foot distribution depot in Castleford, West Yorkshire, creating around 133 new jobs.
The company is investing heavily in its infrastructure, in part due to a spike in demand for online shopping that hasn’t eased since lockdown has softened. Hermes UK say that the decision to open the new depot precedes a projected added spike in demand over the coming peak e-retail shopping season in November and December.
The new Castleford distribution depot will be capable of handling more than 84,000 parcels a day and can be open 24/7 to meet extremely high demand as it comes. This is part of a national infrastructure investment programme to meet demand both in recent months and as part of a general trend where the high street has lost out to online shopping.
Across its network it projects record volumes of up to 3.5 million parcels handled per day – almost double that in 2019.
