IKEA trials parcel lockers in London

Swedish homewares retail giant IKEA is piloting a new click & collect parcel locker service in London. If successful, 20 new IKEA parcel locker units are to be installed in the metropolitan area by the end of 2022.

The Collect Near You lockers, a collaboration between IKEA UK, Shift and Access Self Storage; is open to customers who live within 45km (27 miles) of a parcel locker. They will be charged £10 for delivery on orders of under £200.

Two parcel locker units have been installed in a pilot with three to join the programme as it progresses. Should the pilot be successful, IKEA plans to install 20 across London by the end of the year.

The service is part of a planned £1 billion investment into fulfilment and delivery across the capital within the next three years, including an Oxford Street store and a Dartford Customer Distribution Centre. The new fulfilment centre will allow for 24/7 deliveries and enable 60% of final mile deliveries into London to be zero emissions.

Peter Jelkeby, Country Retail Manager and Chief Sustainability Officer, IKEA UK & Ireland, says: “Everything we do starts with our customers. Over the next three years, we will continue to transform as we respond to their needs and dreams, today and tomorrow. As one of the most innovative and exciting markets in the world for retail and e-commerce, we will step up our omnichannel investments in London with a simple goal: to become more customer centric, so that people can shop with us for a better, more sustainable life at home, whenever, wherever and however they choose.”
