In other Amazon news, moving into potentially its largest market yet, the company has launched its Prime membership programme in India.
Amazon has released a statement saying that Prime customers in more than 100 Indian cities can now have access to unlimited free one day and two day delivery on a huge range of products.
The service will be run through Amazon.in and will be offering a free trial period of 60 days to allow its shoppers to experience Prime.
“We are very excited to bring Prime to our customers in India. With Prime, guaranteed one-day delivery becomes an everyday experience instead of an occasional indulgence, and with no minimum purchases, it provides unlimited convenience all year long” says Amit Agarwal, Vice-President & Country Head, Amazon India.
“For sellers, Fulfillment by Amazon is now an even more powerful opportunity to rapidly grow their business and at the same time, provide customers across India with vast selection and unlimited fast free Prime delivery.”
Prime membership is going to be introduced at an introductory price of INR499, though in succeeding years this will go up to INR999. Those signing up early can get Prime free for 60 days – twice the normal trial trial period offered in other parts of the world.
Those who do not use Prime will continue to have the option of expedited delivery on their orders with usual delivery charges as applicable.
In addition Prime members in 20 cities can also choose same-day, morning or scheduled delivery at a discounted fee of INR 50 per order on over 10,000 products.
For deliveries to cities not yet eligible for one-day or two-day delivery, members will receive free delivery with no minimum purchase.
