JD.com to diversify into hot food delivery

Local media reports that loss making Chinese online giant JD.com is to move into hot food delivery as an attempt to slow its losses. Using the JD Daojia app and DADA Group for logistics, there is to be a pilot in a number of cities before going nationwide.

JD.com’s recently created JD Retail division has plans to offer a number of new services including ‘same-city delivery’ that would allow for ultra-fast delivery of a number of types of products. The company has even signalled that a taxi service is not out of the question.

At the same time as diversifying into new business lines, the online giant – a rival of Meituan and Alibaba – has said that it is to shrink those segments of its business that are loss making. The multibillion dollar company would create waves if it collapsed – it remains to be seen if it remains afloat in the coming year.
