TNT UK Deploys New Tracking Systems

TNT UK announced that it has deployed thousands of mobile computers to improve the visibility of shipments carried through its network. TNT is working with Peak-Ryzex to provide 10,000 devices, including 2,500 new Zebra PDAs. According to both companies, it is one of the largest mobile managed services deals in the United Kingdom.

TNT UK is employing the devices across 55 depots in its UK network. The devices will enable real-time consignment tracking and provide electronic proof of delivery by capturing customers signatures.

In 2014 Peak-Ryzex was awarded the contract to upgrade in-cab mobile worker technology for TNT to supply high speed wireless connections between TNT depots and drivers. TNT report that it has seen improvements in its first time barcode label scanning rates across its network.

Peak-Ryzex is a systems integrator of supply chain automation solutions and services for ERP systems including SAP, wireless RF, RFID, printing and life-cycle support.

TNT UK is one of the companies profiled in Apex Insight’s latest report UK Parcels Carrier Profiles.

Despite some consolidation in recent years, there are still 13 companies operating significant parcels networks in the UK. The largest by revenue are the Royal Mail / Parcelforce, with latest parcels revenue of £3.162bn, UPS (£768m), DHL (£746m) and TNT Express (£743m).

Over the last four years, the Royal Mail, UPS, DPD, Interlink, Hermes and Tuffnells have all grown at a rate of more than 5% per year. DPD and its sister company, Interlink, have performed particularly well with market-leading IT both enhancing service to make it a premium B2C carrier, and reducing costs by improving home delivery success rates. During the same period, three carriers have seen their revenue decrease: DHL (due to a major divestment), TNT (following the aborted UPS takeover) and DX/Nightfreight (as unprofitable, legacy business has been exited as part of the turnaround).

The report, published in the February 2015, details profiles of each of the main UK parcels carriers including service overview, history, financial performance, strategic focus, news and our own insights into them and their prospects.
