Logistics company Menzies Distribution has acquired Gnewt Cargo. Gnewt Cargo is a London delivery firm that boasts the UK’s largest all-electric commercial fleet.
Gnewt Cargo was founded in 2008 and made more than 3 million deliveries across London in 2016. It offers last mile services for retailers, e-commerce companies and parcel companies including Hermes and FedEx owned TNT.
Menzies Distribution said in a statement that the deal supports the company’s “diversification strategy” and will progress its plans to “extend its neutral parcel consolidation services across the UK and Ireland”.
Greg Michael, MD of Menzies, said: “As a holder of the Carbon Trust Standard since 2009, Menzies Distribution has long been focussed on our environmental responsibilities. Acquiring Gnewt was an exciting opportunity for us to advance our sustainability agenda whilst growing our neutral consolidation offer to the parcel market.
“Everyone recognises that goods need to be moved in and around congested city centres. The Gnewt model shows it can be done successfully whilst minimising environmental impacts.
“This acquisition gives us a stronger, cleaner presence in the London market. and with our national reach, gives us a platform to introduce all-electric distribution to other city centres in the UK.”
This is not the first major acquisition Menzies has made recently. While newspaper and magazine distribution remains its core business, it has bought a number of couriers around the UK and its Menzies Parcels division now delivers more than 3 million packages a year.
The logistics and last mile delivery firm has also moved into Ireland with the purchase of the Irish newspaper distributor EM News Distribution for €3.6 million.
