Scotland based, UK logistics company Menzies Distribution has announced plans to be carbon neutral by 2035, 15 years ahead of the target date set under the Paris Agreement.
The logistics company is aiming at Scope 1 and Scope 2 carbon neutrality by 2035. Scope 1 are those emitted by a business in its operations such as vehicle transport. Scope 2 are those are made indirectly, such as office and depot energy use.
Measuring and monitoring Menzies Distribution will be the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The company is to focus on decarbonising its fleet through efficiency and optimisation as well as maximising the use of clean fuels. The targets are to be in place by the end of the year.
Greg Michael, CEO of Menzies, said, “This is an important day for our company. We recognize the scale of the challenge, particularly given the nature of our business, but we also know it is the right thing to do for our own future as well as for our customers, our people and the country as a whole. Success will depend not only on our own actions but also on the development of new technologies and a partnership between the private sector and government. While there will be significant hurdles to overcome, we are determined to play our part in building the sustainable supply chains of the future.”
