Mercedes rolls out electric van models

German vehicle manufacturing giant Mercedes Benz Vans has announced plans to offer all its commercial van model lines with electric drive, beginning with the mid-sized eVito in summer of 2018. The next model ranges will follow from 2019.

Volker Mornhinweg, head of Mercedes-Benz Vans, said: “We are convinced by the necessity of electric drive in our vans, especially in city centre applications.

“The eVito is the starting point and will be followed by our new-generation Sprinter as well as the Citan.”

The new eVito is to have a range of nearly 150km, a top speed of 120km/h, a payload of more than 1 tonne and a cargo volume of 6.6 cubic metres. The battery pack is slung under the load space and even with a full load the maximum gross vehicle weight will be 3,200kg.

According to Mercedes the van is aimed at inner city use by delivery companies, tradespeople and public transport companies. The eVito’s battery can be fully charges in close to six hours, and the performance of the electric van is more than enough to compete with its diesel counterparts.

Mercedes Vans Customers have two choices of top speed. Where 80km/h will do the van will burn less energy and travel further, while the vans with a top speed of 120km/h will have less time on the road between charges.
