International soft drinks giants PepsiCo has announced it is to receive its first Tesla Semi HGV trucks in the fourth quarter of this year.
PepsiCo was among the first businesses to reserve the much hyped fully electric HGVs from Tesla, in December 2017. The 100 on order will help the beverage giant reduce its carbon emissions. The company says that 10% of all its CO2e emissions comes from transport.
The new trucks are to ship snack foods and drinks between manufacturing and distribution centres as well as the final mile to retailers.
Other major US companies to have ordered the Tesla Semi trucks include Walmart, fleet operator JB Hunt and food distributors Sysco Corp.
As part of its commitment to reducing its reliance on carbon, PepsiCo pledged in September to cut back on the use of virgin plastics and to expand its SodaStream carbonated water business to more markets. While gently praising the company, environmental groups say it could do more.
