A 2.5 year trial by the Mayor of London’s office has shown that electric cargo vans are operationally competitive and environmentally friendly by comparison to diesel vans of an equivalent payload.
The trial focused on delivery company Gnewt to test the Voltia vans in Central London using specially modified Voltia e-NV200s and BD Auto eDucatos which were compared against equivalent payload diesel vans. The environmental emissions performance, range, energy consumed and other issues were compared in the project. Twenty-six vans were used in the study.
Some 30% of all traffic in the area – 281,000 journeys per day – are freight transport. The study concluded that in terms of operational performance, cost, vehicle emissions and impact on the grid, electric cargo vans are more competitive than their diesel equivalents.
