Poste Italiane has opened its e-commerce express courier hub in Landriano, which is the largest such hub in Europe.
Standing on a total area of 80,000 square metres, the €60 million automated hub has 600 staff who process up to 300,000 parcels a day.
The staff are supported by an automatic sorting system and 17 robots. To reduce its carbon emissions, 2,500 photovoltaic panels have been installed on the roof that should meet up to 80% of its energy consumption and thereby reduce CO2 emissions by 210 tonnes annually.
CEO, Matteo Del Fante commented on the opening: “The Landriano hub is another step in the process of transforming the logistics infrastructure of Poste Italiane that focuses on innovation and sustainability to better respond to Italians new online purchasing habits. It is a strategic infrastructure that allows us to develop the logistics network along the entire value chain, to grasp the full growth potential deriving from e-commerce. In 2020 alone, Poste Italiane delivered 210 million parcels, becoming the first operator with a market share of 36.7% and starting an extraordinary path that by 2025 it will bring the share of revenues generated by the parcel business to over 50% ”.
