San Francisco is about to award the first ever permit for a footpath delivery robot operation to on-demand delivery company Postmates.
The first permit is set to work for 180 days and is for up to three autonomous delivery robots in a pilot.
Postmates has been working on getting this permit since 2017, looking at the different aspects of a framework for footpath-using delivery robots. The new permit will make San Francisco one of the first cities in the US to formally allow these robots to operate in a new pilot programme.
“We’ve been eager to work directly with cities to seek a collaborative and inclusive approach to robotic deployment that respects our public rights of way, includes community input, and allows cities to develop thoughtful regulatory regimes,” a representative of Postmates said in a statement provided to TechCrunch.
