Royal Mail has announced plans to invest close to £1.8 billion in its UK operations over five years.
One of the effects of this is that it is to offer a second daily delivery run for parcels that is to expand with a view to universal operation by 2023.
The second delivery run will be mainly for Next Day parcels that have been purchased the day before as well as larger items. In most cases customers will receive their goods within 24 hours.
In order to make the second delivery run possible, Royal Mail is setting up three new fully automated delivery hubs.
The first parcel run will be on the letter delivery runs that often occur in the morning via postal delivery staff.
Royal Mail is also going to collect returns from customers at their homes, and offer a range of in-flight redirection options for deliveries to be redirected during the delivery run.
