As the seasonal shopping and postal rush kicks in, Royal Mail is to hire 19,000 temporary staff to meet the increased demand this Christmas. The peak of the temporary work will be in December.
A range of shifts will be hired for between mid November and mid January. Around 14,000 additional people will work in mail distribution centres and data centres in England during this period, while 1340 additional staff will work in Scotland, 550 in Northern Ireland and 560 in Wales. ParcelForce Worldwide will take on 2600 drivers for the seasonal peak as well.
The extra workforce will help the 123,000 permanent staff who deliver mail across the UK at present.
Chief Operations Officer of Royal Mail, Sue Whalley said of the recruitment drive, “Every Christmas, we make a substantial commitment in additional resources to handle the festive mailbag, including the recruitment of thousands of temporary workers.”
