Royal Mail is to open a fully automated parcels super-hub in Warrington in 2022.
The hub has been designed by sortation specialists the Beumer Group, and will be able to handle more than 800,000 parcels per day.
“We have seen a major rise in parcel demand over the past few years. Speeding up the passage of parcels within our system through automated sorting technology is key to boosting Royal Mail’s parcel processing capacity,” said Simon Barker, Royal Mail’s national operations director.
According to the Beumer Group the majority of parcels will enter the hub in roll cages where they will be put into automated tippers which will send them onto a conveyor where singulation and sorting will take place. They will then be loaded into cages for loading onto vans and trucks.
