Sendcloud – Millennials driving change in last mile delivery

Sendcloud has published research showing that Millennials are driving the changes in the last mile delivery ecosystem.

The Sendcloud survey was done among 7,873 online customers from eight European countries. It showed that four out of five UK Millennials considered flexibility a key element of delivery as against 53% of Boomers. Another highlight is that Millennials spend an average of £139 per order as against Boomers’ £61.

Some 63% of Millennials want to be able to change the delivery time of a parcel even while it is on its way, with 58% wanting to be able to change the address at this time too. Boomers were 27% and 25% respectively.

“It’s especially interesting to see that Millennials are setting the standard for online orders and flexible delivery services,” says Rob van den Heuvel, CEO and Co-founder at Sendcloud. 

“The challenge now for shipping and logistics providers is to meet the demand from consumers and provide more choice on where, when and how they receive online orders.”

At the same time, Millennials are significantly more likely to choose premium shopping options such as next-day and same-day deliveries. While 52% of Millennials chose next-day and 31% same-day, 75% of Boomers chose the standard delivery option. CO2 neutral delivery and parcel locker delivery were also far more likely to be chosen by the younger demographic.

Where it comes to price, Millennials are willing to pay more – £5.10 for an order of £15 as against Boomers’ £3.60.
