Shoe and lifestyle brand Skechers USA has completed a fourth phase of its planned expansion of its European distribution centre (EDC) in Liege, Belgium.
The EDC was 98,500m2 and the expansion adds 26,500m2 to the site, and this makes it the largest company operated distribution centre in southern Belgium.
The Skechers EDC was originally 22,500m2 when it was opened in 2002. In 2009, the company added 23,000m2 of space. This was expanded again in 2014 by a further 72,000m2 of space.
The newly expanded facility employs around 250 people and is responsible for the distribution of goods to Skechers subsidiary managed businesses around Europe. These include wholesale accounts, nearly 160 Skechers retail stores, as well as e-commerce companies in the UK and Germany.
Skechers COO and CFO David Weinberg said, “To meet the increased demand, we are investing in our infrastructure, including improved efficiencies in our European distribution center, which allowed us to achieve a record 3 million pairs shipped in a month during February and 8.1 million pairs for the first quarter of 2016.”
Skechers EDC distribution operations vice president Sophie Houtmeyers said, “After outgrowing our storage capacity, we had to manage overflow beyond our facility and this new building will allow us to consolidate storage into the EDC and stabilize our logistics to meet growing needs of the European market over the longer term.”
In addition to the company’s EDC, it also operates a 170,000m2 centre in Rancho Belago, CA. This serves the North and South American markets as well as a number of smaller distribution centres around the world.
Skechers USA develops and sells a range of lifestyle footwear for men, women and children, as well as performance footwear for men and women.
