Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) figures show that the van market is up 8% year on year for the first quarter of this year.
The biggest growth came in the 2.5-3.5 tonne sector which was up 9.7 per cent at 78,653 registrations. Growth in the 2-2.5 tonne sector was seven per cent, with registrations reach 19,109 units.
Looking at the figures on a monthly basis, registrations went up 4.7% as against April 2018. This was driven by demand for small and large vans which were up 8.8 per cent and 6.9 per cent respectively.
SMMT chief Mike Hawes said: “Such a strong start to the year is good news for the sector, drivers and the environment. Getting more of the latest, low emission models onto our roads is the fastest way to tackle climate change and improve air quality, and with modern vehicles also featuring sophisticated safety and comfort features, and a raft of attractive deals on offer, there’s never been a better time to invest in a new van.”
