Swiss Post withdraws from Zurich Airport

Swiss Post is to move mail handling operations from Zurich Airport to Swissport as of the 1st of September, withdrawing from its own mail handling operations in Zurich. Swissport is the world’s largest provider of airport ground operations that already provides the mail transport service in Zurich Airport.

The Swiss postal operator explained in a statement that all of its employees in the Zurich airport mail handing centre will be taken on by Swissport and given equivalent employment conditions.

Swiss Post said in a statement, “Due to the high transit share, the mail handling business at Zurich Airport is not part of Swiss Post’s core business. The decline in letter volumes and lack of synergies pose additional challenges for Swiss Post at Zurich Airport. Swiss Post has therefore decided to transfer its operations to a local service provider.”

A key concern for Swiss Post was for it to find a good solution for both its employees and local partners. The postal operator believes that Swissport suited the move perfectly.

In order to make a smooth transition, work on the transfer will start this month (July).

Mail handling at Geneva Airport will continue to be operated by Swiss Post.
