Supermarket giant Tesco has fired its first salvo of the coming peak shopping season by offering free click and collect for all Tesco Direct orders.
Up until this announcement there had been a surcharge for the service on all orders below £30. Industry insiders suggest that this surcharge is likely to be suspended throughout the peak autumn and winter shopping season – possibly into 2017.
A Tesco Spokesperson told Post&Parcel today (22 September): “With Halloween quickly approaching and Christmas just around the corner, the next few months are extremely busy for our customers. That’s why, as an extra little help, we’re offering free next day Click and Collect on all Tesco Direct orders.”
This will be the first of many such offerings as the peak shopping season gets under way. Major players such as Amazon, Sainsburys / Argos and even Asda (Walmart) have been making acquisitions and making strategic decisions to get a greater market share of the upcoming Black Friday / Cyber Monday and Christmas shopping peaks that come in November and December. Tesco has made no major acquisitions though is the UK’s largest supermarket chain.
Delivery charges are one major consideration that shoppers make when considering the overall cost of a purchase, though it has increasingly been shown that they will pay a premium for same day delivery of goods as well. Amazon offers same day delivery to Prime members in many areas around the UK as does Sainsburys / Argos through the Fast Track offering. Tesco’s manoeuvring may well signal a bonanza for shoppers in this regard in the coming months.
