Uber has announced it is to roll out a same-day parcel delivery service across the UK, called Uber Connect, using its existing network of drivers.
Due to the pandemic, Uber and its drivers have seen significant decline in demand for its ride-hailing services and the same-day delivery service is being set up as a new revenue stream.
Its hot-food delivery service, Uber Eats, has seen a strong uptick in demand thanks to the pandemic as well.
Uber Connect was launched in Leeds, Birmingham and Manchester on February 11, and if the pilots are successful it is to be rolled out nationwide. Using the normal Uber app, those sending the parcels are able to send parcels at a similar price to a person physically getting into the car for the same journey. It also offers package tracking and notifications.
Uber Connect has already been successful in Australia, Mexico, Canada and the USA.
“Daily life remains very different this year and we want to help people keep in touch while staying safe at home as lockdown continues,” said Jamie Heywood, regional general manager for Northern and Eastern Europe at Uber.
“Uber Connect means you can send that last minute gift you accidentally forgot, share a book you loved with one of your friends, or documents for a work colleague.”
