UPU releases international address verification API

For member postal operators to improve international delivery accuracy, the Universal Postal Union (UPU) has launched its new Address Verification API to ensure data quality for trusted deliveries in 192 countries worldwide.

The API is an easy and ready-to-incorporate solution to acquire address data when inputted into posts’ delivery systems and to verify that data with the UPS’s POST*CODE database. The database is updated quarterly and the updates sent to UPU licensees.

“In addition to checking address components against the POST*CODE DataBase, [the API]also checks against derivative databases, such as postal addressing systems, the standardised address format description and knowledge centre information, such as postcode length and postcode format,” explained Luc Hauss, addressing solutions manager.

The new API complements the UPU’s existing APIs that are currently available for international address input and verification at post code and locality level for all 192 member countries. “Twenty years of expertise have gone into developing UPU’s APIs, which incorporate the comprehensive ‘must have’ postal address file reference data,” Hauss added.
