Waitrose invests heavily in online sales

In a move to triple its online business within three years, Waitrose has announced it is to open a 110,000 square foot customer fulfilment centre (CFC) in Enfield, with two more planned beyond.

The high end grocers has signed a deal with Today Development Partners to build three CFCs. Waitrose has also created a board level role of Digital Director, and the current retail director Ben Stimson is to move into this role in an attempt to jump start growth.

The Enfield CFC is set to open in spring 2020. At present many online orders at Waitrose are picked at local stores and it has a reach of around 81% of UK postcodes. The Coulsdon, South London CFC working alongside local shops has been a success, according to the company.

Sales through Waitrose.com in the full year 2018-9 were up 14 per cent on the year before. Digital director Ben Stimson said: “Waitrose.com growth is rapid and we know there are many more new customers who would like to buy our products from us online. This centre is the latest in an exciting raft of investments and will ensure they have a really convenient, easy way to do so.”
