Canada Post suspends community mailbox programme

With the newly elected Liberal government in Canada, the Canada Post community mailbox rollout programme has been suspended. As reported by Apex Insight last week, unions had called for the suspension shortly after the Trudeau government was elected.

The community mailbox programme, where a large number of residents in an area had to collect their post from a local hub instead of having it delivered through their door, was due to be rolled out on the day of the General Election results but the Liberal Party had campaigned against it. It was due to affect 460,000 homes across Canada.

In a statement, Canada Post said of the back down from the new programme, “We will work collaboratively with the Government of Canada to determine the best path forward given the ongoing challenges faced by the Canadian postal system.”

A number of communities had already been changed over to the new system but these will not be reversed for the time being.
